Protected Permissive Left Turn Signals Now in Santee

Full Description:

The Protected Permissive Left Turn traffic signal has arrived in the City of Santee at two inter - sections: Carlton Oaks Drive at Fanita Parkway and Pebble Beach Drive. The “protected phase” means that when a motorist sees a solid green arrow, the entire time is dedicated to the left turn without conflict from oncoming traffic, which is followed by a yellow, then a red arrow. The “permissive phase” means that after the green arrow terminates, motorists will see a solid green ball without a red arrow. Motorists can then make a left turn when safe to do so, while yielding to on-coming traffic. This makes the intersection more efficient and reduces delay.

In order to avoid confusion for motorists, a sign is also mounted on the signal arm that reads: “Left turn yield on green (green ball symbol).” This type of traffic signal has been widely used throughout the country and San Diego County. For comments or concerns, residents may contact (619) 258-4100 ext. 189.
