Protected Permissive Left Turn Signals Now in Santee
Full Description:
The Protected Permissive Left Turn traffic signal
has arrived in the City of Santee at two inter -
sections: Carlton Oaks Drive at Fanita Parkway
and Pebble Beach Drive.
The “protected phase” means that when a
motorist sees a solid green arrow, the entire time
is dedicated to the left turn without conflict from
oncoming traffic, which is followed by a yellow,
then a red arrow.
The “permissive phase” means that after the
green arrow terminates, motorists will see a solid
green ball without a red arrow. Motorists can then
make a left turn when safe to do so, while yielding
to on-coming traffic. This makes the intersection
more efficient and reduces delay.
In order to avoid confusion for motorists, a
sign is also mounted on the signal arm that reads:
“Left turn yield on green (green ball symbol).”
This type of traffic signal has been widely used
throughout the country and San Diego County.
